So is service.
Your attitude should be the same as that of Christ Jesus:
Who, being in the very form of God,
did not consider equality with God something to be grasped
but made himself nothing,
taking the very form of a servant,
being made in human likeness.
And being found in appearance as a man,
he humbled himself and became obedient unto death-
even death on a cross!
Philippians 2: 5-7
Taking the form of a servant is certainly not an effortless challenge. It requires us to make nothing of ourselves! What a contradiction to what we have always heard echoed throughout our lives, “make something of yourself!” How do we go from “something” to “nothing?” Paul gives us the answer in verse 5 when he states, “Your attitude should be the same as that of Christ Jesus.” What is your attitude when it comes to serving? If you are like me, its grumble, stumble then finally crumble and do the thing. The reason we struggle with the difficulty of selfless serving is that there is still a lot of “self” in our serving. Jesus made himself nothing. Emptied. The creator of the universe, the maker of all things… made himself nothing! The form of God became the form of a servant. His God appearance took on human likeness and the appearance of a man. What if we began to serve as Christ served? Emptied of self. Dare I say that we would begin to take on his likeness and form.
2 Corinthians 3:18 says, “And we, who with unveiled faces all reflect the Lord’s glory, are being trans-formed into his likeness with ever-increasing glory , which comes from the Lord, who is the Spirit.
Quiet please! Lord, we are in awe of your majesty and glory. You, Most High God, took on the form of a servant and became obedient to death. You, became nothing so that we could be something… in you. Continue to form Christ in us as we serve one another.
